“Blends sci-fi and action like a young adult X-Men novel, asking what it means to be a hero and what it means to be a villain.” ―

“Beyond the capes and masks is a strikingly grounded story of star-crossed would-be lovers, deception, and the recognition that most of humanity exists between the extremes of good and evil.” ―

It is Hard to Hate the Enemy When you Live Among Them.

I really enjoyed Marissa Mayer’s Lunar Chronicles but never picked up her new Superhero series when it first came out. Well now that it is complete it is time to put it higher on my tbr priority list and I wasn’t disappointed.

***“WE WERE ALL VILLAINS in the beginning.” ***

Let’s all agree that this is a really weird time in the world with all the lockdowns, protests and rioting. So when I started Renegades and it is set in a world where people are living in fear, gangs are running the streets and the basics of society have broken down I almost put it down as it was hitting slightly on the mark of today. I’m glad I didn’t since the set up didn’t take much time and we could get on a little more with the people than the state of the world.

***“There are many dangerous people in this world. but there are also many good people. Brave people. No matter how bad things get, we have to remember that. So long as there are heroes in this world, there's hope that tomorrow night might be better.” ***

Nova was six when her family died tragically, targeted by one of the gangs and executed. She barely survived and since that day was raised by a group of villains. She counted on the Renegades to come and save her and her family, she was so sure it would happen and then when it didn’t she blamed them for not being there. With some kid logic coupled with being raised by villains bent on revenge against the Renegades it has turned into her lifelong obsession to take them down.

***“What the people needed was to learn to take care of themselves, but that would never happen so long as superheroes were running things.” ***

The world used to fear prodigies (people with superpowers) but that changed when the anarchists ignited a revolution and destroyed society. There were so many factions and gangs that pretty much it was a lawless time. Think the wild wild west but with superpowers. The Renegades eventually brought some semblance of order to the land but also at a great cost to Nova, since her Uncle was one of the most prominent prodigies and biggest influencers of chaos at the time.

***“It became the strong against the weak, and, as it turns out, the strong were usually jerks.” ***

The villain group has decided that Nova is perfect for some undercover work and how better to take down an organization than from on the inside. The hard thing is that once you start playing hero, it is hard not to be one of the good guys. It is also even harder to start to get to know your enemy and see them as people. Nova is struggling to hold onto all of her hate and her goals as she makes some friends in the enemy ranks. She might even have a little crush happening on her Renegade team leader, to bad that seems pretty West Side Story doomed.

Good thing there is another prodigy to also focus on who Nova isn’t sure which team he is playing for. The Sentinel seems to be a good guy, but the Renegades don’t know who he is and none of the villains are claiming him either. He is very focused on Nova’s villain ego Nightmare and that is the last thing she needs is someone else looking for her. Little does she know that she and the Sentinel are closer to each other than they know.

***“Your days of villainy are over, Nightmare.”
She scoffed. “You sound like you've read too many comics.”
“You sound like you think that's a bad thing,” he retorted.” ***

I loved spending time with both the villains and the Renegade teams. You could definitely see why one was more cohesive than the other. As Nova traversed both sides it was a little hard not to empathize with both sides of the situation. While I do think Nova’s grudge is a little bit over the top we need it for the story so I’ll let it go. There is some pretty big action at the end and Nova made a hard choice and sacrifice but I like where the story is going and I’m eager to move onto the next book.

I read this one at the beginning of the pandemic, but for some reason book 2 was ridiculously expensive and the library was closed, so I never finished the series. I recently found the other two books for a reasonable price, but it had been so long I decided to re-read this one.

Nova is a prodigy. She can touch a person and put them to sleep. Nova herself doesn't sleep ever. Ever ever. She is part of a group called the Anarchists. And they are ready to take the Renegades down.

The Renegades are superheroes who restored order after the Age of Anarchy, during which prodigies were persecuted and villain gangs were everywhere. Now regular humans adore the Renegades for restoring society, but they have gotten complacent about taking care of themselves.

In order to take down the Renegades, Nova becomes one of them. She becomes part of a team with Adrian, adopted son of two of the founding fathers of the Renegades. He can draw anything in to existence as long as he focuses his intent while drawing. As she spies and learns, she also starts to grow fond of her teammates. And she starts to struggle with what is right and what is wrong.

These books are interesting and pretty exciting. I don't really watch superhero movies but I can definitley see the appeal.
